My friend and I were in Newport Beach, far from Hollywood, where I call home. After a quick early errand we were in dire need of caffeine. Freelance was highly recommended so we checked it out. You go down an industrial looking street to the almost last building. This one was covered in greenery. And dispute the almost lack of signage, we could literally smell the beans roasting and kind of figured we found it.
Walking in, immediately it was obvious that this was just a coffee shop. It clearly was a sort of Mecca for those who needed an electrical outlet, plenty of room and counter space, comfy chairs, if that was your vibe, and also had the most adorable store. I honestly had to stop myself from buying everything there.
After going through the foyer, a mini shop, two rooms of work space, and just kind of, industrial fixers and walls, we ended up at the actual barista’s counter. It was a relatively more limited menu if you say, frequent Starbucks. But everything they had looked fantastic. There was also a little refrigerator with tasty looking snacks.
I ended up trying their blend of chai with almond milk and my friend stuck to her old faithful, a flat white. But it was anything but your average morning beverage. The beans were roasted just enough to have the flavor without sacrificing the caffeine. Their chai blend is fantastic. I love when chai has a notable taste of turmeric.
All of the staff was incredibly friendly and not pretentious, like I expected them to be. It was really packed for a 10 am on a Friday, as well. I was impressed. Clearly this is a neighborhood spot people feel safe and free to work and relax in. Which is a breathe of fresh air from how most coffee houses in Hollywood, especially, are.
In the end, I took (obviously) a ridiculous amount of photos and we both were really glad we stopped there. And we’re kind of bummed it was literally an hour and half from us.
If I find myself in Newport again, I’ll definitely go out of my way to stop the

This is one of really nice, delicious and atmospheric pieces in OC 🙂😍 Aesthetically pleasing and unconventional, something that's lacking in cafes in California. The coffee is quite tasty.

Tropical space with plants, table space and public wifi - great for working remote in warm inviting environment. Tried the Iced Matcha with orange cardamom syrup - delicious!

I wanted to try some coffee that wasn’t near a bunch of tourist locations and this was a pleasant 10 min drive from Newport Beach.
I ordered a cortado to sit and a cold brew to go.
My cortado was just amazing. Real good espresso. I ordered some coffee for some family members and they agreed it was very good coffee. The cold brew is very smooth and has a very pleasant taste.
Aside from the coffee the vibe early in the morning was calm and refreshing.

I happened to see Freelance Coffee Project Cafe on Instagram and visited here out of curiosity.
The exterior of the building is covered with plants, which contrasts well with the surrounding buildings.
I tried Hot Long Black and Butter Croissant.
Long Black had a good balance of richness and acidity, which was delicious.
Butter Croissant looked really delicious, but when I tasted it, the texture wasn’t crisp on the outside and the inside was a bit dry, so to be honest, it wasn’t as good as l expected.
I’ll have to try other pastries next time I visit.
The staff were all friendly, and the atmosphere inside the store was clean, neat, and nice… overall the vibe was good!
So, l’d like to visit again soon.

A "working" business in a warehouse beautifully converted to a well decorated coffee shop, where large amounts of green coffee are brought in, roasted to their specs, packaged then brewed into their ideal cup of coffee. The cup of coffee itself isn't terribly cheap (thank you, tariffs) the taste was well balanced - bean was not too "toasted", with perfect grind and extraction settings.
This was a 25-30 minute drive for me, I made my choice by searching for single origin, self roasted ground and extracted with well known equipment which is rare to find. I will definitely make the trek here once in a while to taste the different batches.

A modern minimalistic interior design coffee roasting shop with an organic-earthy touch. Soft indie music being played in the background. Descent amount of seating for those wanting to sit and sip.
The staff was nice and fast with their services
I ordered the Pistachio Latte which was rich, smooth, and creamy
